Why this role is important?

We are looking to hire a full-time lawyer to support the Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM) business, including its affiliated health and wellness businesses such as Lifemark Health Corp. (Lifemark). Alongside your colleagues in the SDM Legal group, you will provide support on a wide range of commercial contracts as well as on pharmacy and clinic acquisitions. You will support the implementation of process improvements and efficiencies where needed, and will provide sound, practical advice, using excellent judgment in a fast-paced business environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Draft and negotiate pharmacy related agreements, including purchase and sale agreements, supply and distribution agreements, and licensing agreements.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate services agreements across Lifemark’s suite of service offerings, including occupational health and wellness, rehabilitation, vocational, and medical assessment services.
  • Work with various business units within the SDM and Lifemark business teams to effect pharmacy and rehabilitation (e.g., physiotherapy, chiropractic, RMT) clinic acquisitions.
  • Provide the business with counsel and advice with respect to pharmacy and health professions regulatory matters.
  • Propose to the business practical solutions for structuring business arrangements.
  • Work with business and members of the legal department to implement strategic initiatives in connection with various special projects.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of annual team objectives.
  • Be an active participant within the legal department, including participation in committees of interest.
  • Personally demonstrate and foster within the SDM legal team a culture of excellence that reflects SDM values.

What You Bring

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario with 1-2 years of relevant post-call experience in a law firm or in-house environment.
  • Strong business acumen, with a demonstrated ability to provide creative business-oriented solutions.
  • A self-starter, motivated and resourceful individual who demonstrates initiative and the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy and health professions regulations would be an asset, but not a pre-requisite.
  • Ability to manage projects with minimal supervision.
  • Proven contract drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Takes a proactive and creative approach to risk management and legal problem solving.
  • Team player who demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively and to build relationships across the business.
  • Fluent bilingualism in written and spoken French is an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • SDM has adopted a hybrid working model which includes a combination of working 4 days in the office and 1 day remotely. For in-office days, this position is based primarily in our North York office at 243 Consumers Road.
